How the outbreak is evolving

Other affected countries

The outbreak began in the DRC. Three other countries have confirmed cases, all linked to the DRC: Uganda, France and Kenya. The figures on this page do not come from INSP bulletins but from WHO and the authorities of these countries; each country lists its sources.

Uganda was the first country affected outside the DRC. On 15 and 16 May 2026, two patients who had come from the DRC were confirmed in Kampala, with no link between them; one of them died. The first, a 59-year-old man, had been admitted to hospital in the capital on 11 May.

The virus then spread locally. By 24 May there were 7 cases, including the driver who had transported the first patient and a Congolese health worker who accompanied fellow nationals seeking care. By the end of May, cases had also reached the neighbouring district of Wakiso, within the Kampala metropolitan area, and five health workers were among the patients. The last confirmed case was identified on 21 June.

In all, Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases (13 men and 7 women) and one probable case, with three deaths: two confirmed, one probable. 831 contacts were identified and followed. The last patient left hospital on 16 July; after 42 days without a new case, the outbreak ended on 27 August.

The only case outside Africa is a doctor who had been deployed for five weeks in Ituri, caring for Ebola patients. On arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport on 23 June 2026, he reported his symptoms himself to the airport health services. He had no fever, but was isolated at once in a high-containment facility, where a PCR test detected Bundibugyo virus. France notified WHO on 24 June.

The five passengers seated near him on the plane were quarantined; all completed their 21 days of follow-up without falling ill. In the DRC, 107 of his contacts were followed in Kinshasa. The doctor recovered: he left hospital on 4 July after two negative PCR tests. There was no transmission in France.

First case

Kenya

Kenya confirmed its first case on 6 October 2026. The patient, a Kenyan who lived in the DRC, had been treated there in several health facilities. On 2 October he travelled by road to Kampala via Beni, then flew to Nairobi, arriving on 3 October.

Isolated at Nairobi Hospital, he died on the night of 5 October and was buried on 6 October following the safe burial protocol. Bundibugyo virus was detected by the National Virology Reference Laboratory and by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

28 contacts, including relatives and health workers, are being followed, as are the 23 passengers and 4 crew members of the flight. The country had been preparing since May: more than 652,000 travellers screened on entry, 267 suspected samples tested and about 5,000 health workers trained.
