Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 5 Sep 2026, published 6 Sep 2026, reports 82 new confirmed cases and 41 deaths. 82 cases is in line with the seven-day average of 80.4 a day. No new health zone since 4 Sep 2026: the outbreak remains in 61 zones across 6 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 6,604 confirmed cases and 3,175 deaths: 48.1% of patients have died. 1,548 people have recovered. 32 more than the day before. 851 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 80.4 cases and 37.7 deaths a day, against 75.3 cases and 38.4 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 49 of the 82 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 31 and Haut-Uélé with 2. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 45 of these 82 cases: Bunia 12, Nizi 12, Mongbwalu 8, Butembo 7 and Beni 6. 52 of the 61 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 9 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 41 deaths reported today, 32 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 9 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 17 in Nord-Kivu and 15 in Ituri. Those in a treatment centre: 5 in Ituri and 4 in Nord-Kivu. The 5 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 361 deaths before them.
04The response
1,628 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,369 were checked and 286 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Kivu did not send its figures. Of 404 samples tested in the laboratory, 82 were positive, that is 20.3 %. This share reaches 32.3 % in Nord-Kivu. 85.7 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, above the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé and Tshopo. Ebola treatment centres are 61.8 % full: 851 patients for 1,376 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 253 patients for 220 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 152 deaths reported, 113 burials carried out, 104 bodies tested. 30 bodies could not be tested because families objected. Around new cases, 31 prevention rings were set up out of 93 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 1,875 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 1,375 in Tshopo (figure of 3 Sep 2026) and 500 in Bas-Uélé. The vaccine is out of stock. At control points on roads and at borders, 258,604 travellers passed through and 98.2 % had a temperature check. 2,809 people refused this check.
05The difficulties encountered
In Nord-Kivu, treatment centres are overflowing, at 115% of their capacity, and patients are treated in facilities not meant for Ebola; in Beni, residents are threatening to burn down the Ndindi morgue after the body of a confirmed patient was taken away. In Ituri, prevention lags behind: 18 prevention rings set up out of 60 expected around new cases, 30 bodies that could not be tested because families objected, 19 patients who refused to be hospitalised in a single day, and 2,581 travellers who refused the temperature check at control points, plus 228 in Haut-Uélé, because of rumours of poisoned water and thermometers. In Bas-Uélé, everything is missing at once: teams to follow contacts, a treatment centre, an ambulance, and the Ervebo vaccine, out of stock, which interrupts the vaccination of health workers. Two response teams did not send their figures: the control points of Bas-Uélé, and Sud-Kivu, where only 55% of the expected reports arrived.
