03Deaths

Of the 35 deaths reported today, 23 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 12 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 18 in Ituri and 5 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 6 in Ituri and 6 in Nord-Kivu. The 6 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 436 deaths before them.

04The response

1,965 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,766 were checked and 351 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 387 samples tested in the laboratory, 58 were positive, that is 15.0 %. This share reaches 20.9 % in Ituri. 78.6 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Haut-Uélé, Nord-Kivu and Sud-Ubangi. Ebola treatment centres are 47.0 % full: 566 patients for 1,205 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 332 patients, 145.6 % full. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 129 deaths reported, 122 burials carried out, 110 bodies tested. 9 bodies could not be tested because families objected. Around new cases, 57 prevention rings were set up out of 111 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 2,807 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 2,307 in Tshopo and 500 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 5 Sep 2026). At control points on roads and at borders, 252,583 travellers passed through and 98.1 % had a temperature check.

05The difficulties encountered

In Ituri, six treatment centres remain full on the suspected-case side, 25 prevention rings out of 61 are open, nine bodies could not be tested, for lack of means in Mandima and because families refused elsewhere, and three control posts are on strike over unpaid wages. In Nord-Kivu, contact follow-up has fallen sharply, 11 homes out of 49 have been disinfected, 45% of patients are treated outside a centre, no bed is left in Butembo or Katwa, and the police guarding health facilities are unpaid. In Tshopo, a rumour of a 300-dollar bonus for every alert circulated, the patient who fled the centre is still at home and the incinerator is still broken. In Haut-Uélé, no communication material is left. In Bas-Uélé, still no treatment centre and no ambulance.
