03Deaths

Of the 28 deaths reported today, 22 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 6 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 13 in Ituri, 8 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé. Those in a treatment centre: 4 in Ituri, 1 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé. The 4 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 489 deaths before them.

04The response

1,971 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,971 were checked and 347 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 328 samples tested in the laboratory, 53 were positive, that is 16.2 %. 73.5 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Ebola treatment centres are 55.3 % full: 757 patients for 1,369 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 365 patients for 354 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 124 burials carried out and 104 bodies tested. The 47 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 34 prevention rings were set up out of 56 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 8,650 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 6,897 in Tshopo (figure of 28 Sep 2026), 1,022 in Bas-Uélé and 731 in Ituri. Since the previous bulletin, 3 more in Bas-Uélé and 129 more in Ituri. At control points on roads and at borders, 252,041 travellers passed through and 97.3 % had a temperature check.

05The difficulties encountered

In Ituri, some treatment centres lack space and food for patients, 15 bodies were not sampled for lack of supplies, teams or because families refused, and only 13 affected health zones out of 28 have psychological support. In Nord-Kivu, only one home in seven has been decontaminated (3 of 21), none received a kit and prevention reports arrive only half the time (9 zones out of 16). In Haut-Uélé, psychosocial workers lack transport in Wamba and Boma Mangbetu, and data comes through poorly. In Tshopo, use of health services is falling and the temporary closure of one facility is still proposed. In Bas-Uélé, there is still no compliant treatment centre and no ambulance, and vaccination has neither a validated plan nor funds.
