Bulletin No. 156Situation as of 17 Oct 2026
Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
40 new cases, 25 deaths
The bulletin of 17 Oct 2026, published 18 Oct 2026, reports 40 new confirmed cases and 25 deaths. 40 cases is below the seven-day average of 68.1 a day. No new health zone since 16 Oct 2026: the outbreak remains in 66 zones across 8 provinces.
Since the outbreak began, 9,455 confirmed cases and 4,561 deaths: 48.2% of patients have died. 2,530 people have recovered. 8 more than the day before. 925 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 68.1 cases and 32.1 deaths a day, against 62.0 cases and 31.7 deaths the week before.
02 Where
Ituri accounts for 27 of the 40 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 9, Haut-Uélé with 2 and Tshopo with 2. The other 4 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 29 of these 40 cases: Mandima 14, Bunia 4, Beni 4, Mabalako 4 and Nizi 3. 48 of the 66 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 18 reported none.
03 Deaths
Of the 25 deaths reported today, 9 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 16 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 5 in Ituri and 4 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 12 in Ituri, 2 in Nord-Kivu and 2 in Haut-Uélé.
04 The response
2,659 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 2,651 were checked and 458 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Ubangi did not send its figures. Of 411 samples tested in the laboratory, 40 were positive, that is 9.7 %. This share reaches 16.4 % in Ituri. 80.0 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Ebola treatment centres hold 86 patients per 100 beds: 529 patients for 615 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 471 patients for 410 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 130 burials carried out and 124 bodies tested. The 58 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 50 prevention rings were set up out of 67 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 8,353 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 4,953 in Tshopo (figure of 27 Sep 2026), 1,500 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 9 Oct 2026), 1,120 in Ituri (figure of 15 Oct 2026), 588 in Haut-Uélé (figure of 16 Oct 2026) and 192 in Nord-Kivu. Since the previous bulletin, 130 more in Nord-Kivu.
05 The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, 45 patients are in critical condition, only 6 bags of blood remain, 8 of 35 prevention rings are still to be opened and 14 of 79 bodies could not be swabbed. In Nord-Kivu, 92.7% of beds for suspected cases are occupied, 122 of 471 hospitalised patients are being treated outside treatment centres and 47 safe and dignified burials have been postponed to the next day because families were not ready. In Haut-Uélé, treatment centres struggle to communicate without a Starlink connection, some unpaid staff are demotivated and the Pawa centre has neither a fence nor cleaning equipment. In Tshopo, infection prevention supplies are lacking and the two vaccination registers differ by 551 vaccinated people. In Bas-Uélé, 16 of 20 priority health facilities have no working patient triage, there is neither an ambulance nor a treatment centre up to standard and vaccines are in short supply.
