Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 23 Sep 2026, published 24 Sep 2026, reports 70 new confirmed cases and 20 deaths. 70 cases is above the seven-day average of 59.3 a day. No new health zone since 18 Sep 2026: the outbreak remains in 63 zones across 7 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths: 48.1% of patients have died. 1,966 people have recovered. 15 more than the day before. 893 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 59.3 cases and 27.7 deaths a day, against 76.1 cases and 36.6 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 31 of the 70 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 31, Haut-Uélé with 6, Tshopo with 1 and Bas-Uélé with 1. The other 2 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 39 of these 70 cases: Beni 14, Mandima 9, Komanda 6, Bunia 5 and Nia-Nia 5. 48 of the 63 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 15 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 20 deaths reported today, 11 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 9 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 7 in Ituri and 4 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 6 in Ituri and 3 in Nord-Kivu.
04The response
2,173 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 2,133 were checked and 353 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 453 samples tested in the laboratory, 70 were positive, that is 15.5 %. This share reaches 23.1 % in Haut-Uélé. 83.4 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Ebola treatment centres are 59.6 % full: 871 patients for 1,461 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 369 patients for 308 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 115 burials carried out and 123 bodies tested. The 150 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 51 prevention rings were set up out of 76 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 5,028 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 4,058 in Tshopo, 874 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 20 Sep 2026) and 96 in Ituri. Since the previous bulletin, 184 more in Tshopo. At control points on roads and at borders, 243,796 travellers passed through and 98.1 % had a temperature check.
05The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, six treatment centres are full on the suspected-case side, only half of the rings could be opened (15 of 30) and 25 swabs on bodies failed. In Nord-Kivu, nearly one hospitalised patient in three (32.2%) is treated outside the planned facilities, no bed is free in Butembo or Katwa, and no case household has received a hygiene kit (0 of 15). In Tshopo, only 35% of the targeted health workers are vaccinated and there is still no safe blood. In Haut-Uélé, medicines are in severe short supply in Isiro, Wamba, Pawa and Boma Mangbetu. In Bas-Uélé, no treatment centre and no ambulance, and more vaccine doses are needed.
