Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 28 Aug 2026, published 29 Aug 2026, reports 82 new confirmed cases and 38 deaths. 82 cases is above the seven-day average of 69.6 a day. There is 1 new zone affected: Boma-Mangbetu (Haut-Uélé); the outbreak now affects 60 zones in 6 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 5,945 confirmed cases and 2,862 deaths: 48.1% of patients have died. 1,327 people have recovered. 9 more than the day before. 896 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 69.6 cases and 36.6 deaths a day, against 87.9 cases and 47.7 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 66 of the 82 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 12 and Haut-Uélé with 4. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 57 of these 82 cases: Bunia 28, Mangala 14, Nizi 6, Butembo 5 and Katwa 4. 51 of the 60 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 9 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 38 deaths reported today, 24 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 14 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 17 in Ituri and 7 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 10 in Ituri, 2 in Haut-Uélé, 1 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Bas-Uélé. The 10 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 297 deaths before them.
04The response
2,025 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,639 were checked and 395 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Kivu did not send its figures. 84.4 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé. Ebola treatment centres are 64.7 % full: 869 patients for 1,343 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 236 patients for 220 beds. Around new cases, 29 prevention rings were set up out of 33 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 142 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 122 in Tshopo (figure of 27 Aug 2026) and 20 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 26 Aug 2026). At control points on roads and at borders, 263,678 travellers passed through and 97.8 % had a temperature check.
05The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, 67% of the homes to disinfect were done and no hygiene kit was distributed; teams are lacking in Fataki, Mangala and Nizi, vehicles in Komanda, Bambu, Mandima and Mangala; a suspected patient refused to be hospitalised in Nia-Nia and a family refused a safe burial in Lolwa; psychological support reaches only 5 of the 11 zones that reported cases. In Nord-Kivu, centres hold 107.3% of their capacity and some suspected patients are kept outside the centres; insecurity persists around burial sites in Beni. In Bas-Uélé, no treatment centre up to standard and no partner organisation for care, and contact follow-up lacks teams, as in Haut-Uélé, where four control points did not send their figures. In Tshopo, insufficient protective suits, untrained health workers and a broken incinerator.
