Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 22 Aug 2026, published 23 Aug 2026, reports 55 new confirmed cases and 36 deaths. 55 cases is below the seven-day average of 81.3 a day. No new health zone since 21 Aug 2026: the outbreak remains in 57 zones across 6 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 5,514 confirmed cases and 2,642 deaths: 47.9% of patients have died. 1,200 people have recovered. 18 more than the day before. 808 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 81.3 cases and 45.3 deaths a day, against 93.0 cases and 52.1 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 35 of the 55 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 16 and Haut-Uélé with 4. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 41 of these 55 cases: Bunia 17, Katwa 8, Nizi 6, Beni 6 and Lita 4. 48 of the 57 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 9 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 36 deaths reported today, 23 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 13 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 12 in Ituri and 11 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 10 in Ituri and 3 in Nord-Kivu.
04The response
1,164 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,109 were checked and 212 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 327 samples tested in the laboratory, 55 were positive, that is 16.8 %. 83.4 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé. Ebola treatment centres are 58.6 % full: 771 patients for 1,315 beds. Around new cases, 14 prevention rings were set up out of 57 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives.
05The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, prevention rings are set up around only one new case in four (24.6%), for lack of disinfection teams in Fataki and Mangala, vehicles in Komanda and Bambu and supplies in Mandima; 12 tests on bodies failed, families opposed safe burials in Bambu, Nyankunde, Rwampara, Aru and Fataki, and a team was chased away with machetes in Kilo. The Nizi and Bambu treatment centres are full, and 25 patients isolated in Kilo, Sota, Lolwa, Rimba and Mandima receive no food. In Nord-Kivu, suspected patients from Butembo, Masereka, Vuhovi and Kalunguta are kept in facilities not meant for this, 2,820 travellers refused the temperature check, and a family in Beni barred teams from the home of a confirmed patient. In Haut-Uélé, the seven centres lack equipment, Isiro holds 120% and Wamba 140% of their capacity, and five control points are closed by a strike of unpaid staff; contact follow-up remains weak in Haut-Uélé and Bas-Uélé, where Buta has neither a treatment centre nor an ambulance. Only 8 of Ituri's 28 affected zones pass on what the population says.
