Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 16 Aug 2026, published 17 Aug 2026, reports 76 new confirmed cases and 53 deaths. 76 cases is below the seven-day average of 91.4 a day. There is 1 new zone affected: Makiso-Kisangani (Tshopo); the outbreak now affects 55 zones in 6 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths: 47.4% of patients have died. 1,061 people have recovered. 21 more than the day before. 751 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 91.4 cases and 52.4 deaths a day, against 82.7 cases and 43.4 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 63 of the 76 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 11, Haut-Uélé with 1 and Tshopo with 1. The other 2 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 44 of these 76 cases: Bunia 17, Lita 8, Rwampara 7, Mangala 6 and Katwa 6. 47 of the 55 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 8 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 53 deaths reported today, 30 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 23 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 22 in Ituri, 7 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Tshopo. Those in a treatment centre: 18 in Ituri, 4 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé. The 18 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 130 deaths before them.
04The response
1,067 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 957 were checked and 272 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Kivu did not send its figures. Of 252 samples tested in the laboratory, — were positive, that is —. This share reaches 25.4 % in Ituri. 82.2 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé. Ebola treatment centres are 62.4 % full: 747 patients for 1,197 beds.
05The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, the Bambu and Mangala treatment centres are saturated for confirmed and suspected cases alike, Nizi for confirmed cases, Fataki, Kilo and Kigonze for suspected cases; 2 ambulances are broken down, 21 prevention rings were opened out of 97 expected and 48 sites disinfected out of 97; refusals of safe burial are reported in Tchomia, Mandima and Nyakunde, and community relays in Nizi and Nyankunde no longer make home visits for lack of pay. In Nord-Kivu, 2,373 travellers refused the temperature check and 14 community incidents remain unresolved in Musienene. In Haut-Uélé, a strike by unpaid staff left six control points without reports, 10 ambulances are missing and posters exist only in French and Swahili. In Tshopo, 35% of control points are active, the treatment centre lacks space, safe blood and specialists, two incinerators at the Makiso-Kisangani hospital are broken, stocks of head covers and masks are at zero, 309 kg of chlorine are available for 1,800 kg needed, and 178 motorbikes are missing.
