Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 3 Sep 2026, published 4 Sep 2026, reports 94 new confirmed cases and 23 deaths. 94 cases is above the seven-day average of 81.9 a day. There is 1 new zone affected: Boma Mangbetu (Haut-Uélé); the outbreak now affects 60 zones in 6 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 6,436 confirmed cases and 3,095 deaths: 48.1% of patients have died. 1,495 people have recovered. 20 more than the day before. 738 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 81.9 cases and 38.7 deaths a day, against 69.7 cases and 38.1 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 60 of the 94 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 25 and Haut-Uélé with 9. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 44 of these 94 cases: Bunia 11, Katwa 11, Nizi 8, Mangala 7 and Mongbwalu 7. 51 of the 60 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 9 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 23 deaths reported today, 17 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 6 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 10 in Ituri and 7 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 3 in Ituri, 2 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé. The 3 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 351 deaths before them.
04The response
1,792 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,512 were checked and 345 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Kivu did not send its figures. Of 514 samples tested in the laboratory, 94 were positive, that is 18.3 %. This share reaches 24.3 % in Haut-Uélé. 88.5 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, above the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé and Tshopo. Ebola treatment centres are 53.8 % full: 727 patients for 1,351 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 225 patients for 220 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 129 deaths reported, 103 burials carried out, 93 bodies tested. Around new cases, 20 prevention rings were set up out of 27 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 1,834 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 1,375 in Tshopo and 459 in Bas-Uélé. At control points on roads and at borders, 255,169 travellers passed through and 98.1 % had a temperature check. 209 people refused this check.
05The difficulties encountered
In Nord-Kivu, centres hold 102.7% of their capacity and more than half of patients, 51.7%, are treated in facilities not meant for Ebola; a family in Katsya (Butembo) hesitates to let its home be disinfected and the Kalunguta team was assaulted in Mataba. In Ituri, prevention rings are set up around three new cases in four (20 of 27); 21 patients refused to be hospitalised in Rwampara, Bunia, Tchomia and Lolwa, 9 bodies could not be tested in Bambu, Fataki and Mandima; the Lita centre is full and the extension of Nizi and Bambu is delayed; four control points are on strike. In Tshopo, residents prevent the prevention ring around the 20th patient, blood for transfusions has been lacking for six days, only one health facility out of 79 follows hygiene rules at more than 80%, and 18 of 30 control points are working. In Bas-Uélé, no prevention ring set up, six zones whose health workers are not trained in hygiene, two hospitals without sorting of patients at the entrance, neither a centre up to standard nor an ambulance. In Haut-Uélé, 209 travellers refused the temperature check at Magambe, 19 recovered people left Isiro without a home-return kit, and vaccination teams have no vehicle.
