Today's figures

85 new cases, 44 deaths

The bulletin of 19 Oct 2026, published 20 Oct 2026, reports 85 new confirmed cases and 44 deaths. 85 cases is above the seven-day average of 70.4 a day. No new health zone since 16 Oct 2026: the outbreak remains in 66 zones across 8 provinces.

Since the outbreak began, 9,637 confirmed cases and 4,646 deaths: 48.2% of patients have died. 2,574 people have recovered. 24 more than the day before. 1,029 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 70.4 cases and 33.7 deaths a day, against 68.4 cases and 33.1 deaths the week before.

02 Where

Ituri accounts for 43 of the 85 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 33, Haut-Uélé with 6, Tshopo with 2 and Nord-Ubangi with 1. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 43 of these 85 cases: Beni 13, Bunia 10, Mandima 10, Nizi 5 and Mutwanga 5. 50 of the 66 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 16 reported none.

03 Deaths

Of the 44 deaths reported today, 29 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 15 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 15 in Ituri, 11 in Nord-Kivu, 2 in Haut-Uélé and 1 in Tshopo. Those in a treatment centre: 10 in Ituri, 4 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé.

04 The response

3,184 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 3,184 were checked and 556 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Ubangi did not send its figures. Of 514 samples tested in the laboratory, 85 were positive, that is 16.5 %. This share reaches 25.0 % in Haut-Uélé. 77.8 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Ebola treatment centres hold 90 patients per 100 beds: 551 patients for 615 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 509 patients for 410 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 136 burials carried out and 143 bodies tested. The 53 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 40 prevention rings were set up out of 63 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 8,634 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 4,953 in Tshopo (figure of 27 Sep 2026), 1,500 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 9 Oct 2026), 1,120 in Ituri (figure of 15 Oct 2026), 589 in Haut-Uélé and 472 in Nord-Kivu. Since the previous bulletin, 1 more in Haut-Uélé, over three days and 280 more in Nord-Kivu, over two days.

05 The difficulties encountered

In Ituri, 57 patients are in critical condition, blood is short, 18 of 104 bodies could not be swabbed and 12 of the 42 most recent confirmed cases are still waiting for psychosocial support. In Nord-Kivu, 13 of 22 prevention rings are still to be opened, 44 safe and dignified burials have been postponed to the next day and 177 of 509 hospitalised patients are being treated outside treatment centres. In Haut-Uélé, two families refused a safe burial in Isiro, BCG vaccine has been out of stock there since 25 September and the ultra-cold freezers are broken. In Tshopo, 4 confirmed patients from Bafwasende have been lost to follow-up and only 10 of 18 checkpoints sent their data. In Bas-Uélé, the Buta treatment centre is still not in place and 44 suspected cases are isolated without nutritional support. In Sud-Kivu, three entry points have no isolation facility.
