03Deaths

Of the 34 deaths reported today, 23 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 11 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 15 in Ituri and 8 in Nord-Kivu. Those in a treatment centre: 5 in Ituri, 4 in Nord-Kivu, 1 in Haut-Uélé and 1 in Tshopo.

04The response

1,877 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,851 were checked and 300 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 445 samples tested in the laboratory, 56 were positive, that is 12.6 %. 79.2 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, below the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Tshopo. Ebola treatment centres are 54.7 % full: 825 patients for 1,507 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 365 patients for 354 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 57 burials carried out and 57 bodies tested. The 78 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 18 prevention rings were set up out of 33 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 5,028 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 4,058 in Tshopo (figure of 23 Sep 2026), 874 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 20 Sep 2026) and 96 in Ituri (figure of 23 Sep 2026). At control points on roads and at borders, 255,240 travellers passed through and 97.5 % had a temperature check.

05The difficulties encountered

In Ituri, six treatment centres are full on the suspected-case side, two bodies intercepted at control points were not sampled and one suspected case escaped; only 16 of 27 rings could be opened, and 9 swabs failed for lack of supplies or because families refused. In Nord-Kivu, nearly one hospitalised patient in three (31.2%) is treated outside the planned facilities, no bed is free in Butembo or Katwa, vaccination of health workers has still not started, and burial teams are not safe in Beni. In Haut-Uélé, medicines are in severe short supply in Isiro, Wamba, Pawa and Boma Mangbetu, only 2 of 6 rings are open and two families refused in Wamba. In Tshopo, no safe blood, limited technical facilities, and no vaccination data. In Bas-Uélé, the vaccine stock has fallen to zero, there is no treatment centre and no ambulance, and only one home out of two has been decontaminated.
