03Deaths

Of the 41 deaths reported today, 31 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 10 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 15 in Ituri, 15 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Haut-Uélé. Those in a treatment centre: 9 in Ituri and 1 in Nord-Kivu. The 9 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 378 deaths before them.

04The response

1,508 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,240 were checked and 329 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 481 samples tested in the laboratory, 71 were positive, that is 14.8 %. 88.3 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, above the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé and Tshopo. Ebola treatment centres are 58.7 % full: 793 patients for 1,351 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 254 patients for 220 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 143 deaths reported, 133 burials carried out, 123 bodies tested. Around new cases, 62 prevention rings were set up out of 110 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 1,875 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 1,375 in Tshopo (figure of 3 Sep 2026) and 500 in Bas-Uélé (figure of 5 Sep 2026).

05The difficulties encountered

In Nord-Kivu, 101 of the 254 hospitalised patients, or 40%, are treated in facilities that are not treatment centres; in Masereka, a confirmed patient fled after his result was announced, and a family in Munzambaye, in the Butembo zone, refuses the disinfection of its home. In Ituri, the centres of Nizi, Mambasa, Lolwa and Kilo are full on the suspected-case side, 25 prevention rings were opened out of 70 expected, bodies could not be tested in Mandima and Fataki for lack of teams, and refusals of safe burial are reported in Bunia, Nizi, Nia-Nia and Aru; in Nord-Kivu, 8 bodies were not tested in Kalunguta and Vuhovi for lack of transport. In Tshopo, teams were attacked in Bethsaïda, in the Mangobo zone, amid rumours of “Ebola business”, 11 contacts refuse follow-up in Matete, safe blood is lacking, and vaccination received only 3,000 doses out of 11,000 requested. In Haut-Uélé, the Pawa centre lacks hygiene facilities and the Isiro centre lacks space, water and electricity; a rumour says patients are locked up under the tents of the Isiro hospital. In Bas-Uélé, still no treatment centre or ambulance, too few teams to follow contacts, and the Ervebo vaccine remains out of stock in Buta. At control points, four posts in Ituri are on strike for lack of pay, Avakubi remains closed because of insecurity, and Tshopo has activated only 18 posts out of 30.
