Summary of the INSP bulletin, with each new release
The bulletin of 16 Sep 2026, published 17 Sep 2026, reports 71 new confirmed cases and 28 deaths. 71 cases is in line with the seven-day average of 76.1 a day. No new health zone since 10 Sep 2026: the outbreak remains in 62 zones across 7 provinces.
01The toll
Since the outbreak began, 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths: 48.2% of patients have died. 1,798 people have recovered. 22 more than the day before. 905 patients are hospitalised in Ebola treatment centres. Over the past seven days, an average of 76.1 cases and 36.6 deaths a day, against 85.7 cases and 39.6 deaths the week before.
02Where
Ituri accounts for 41 of the 71 new cases. Then Nord-Kivu with 27, Haut-Uélé with 2 and Tshopo with 1. The other 3 provinces report none. 5 zones carry 36 of these 71 cases: Beni 14, Bunia 9, Nia-Nia 5, Bambu 4 and Mambasa 4. 49 of the 62 affected health zones reported at least one new case in the past three weeks; 13 reported none.
03Deaths
Of the 28 deaths reported today, 18 occurred in the community, that is outside a treatment centre, and 10 in a treatment centre. Deaths outside a centre: 11 in Ituri, 6 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Tshopo. Those in a treatment centre: 9 in Ituri and 1 in Nord-Kivu. The 9 in Ituri have not yet been assigned to a specific health zone, like 456 deaths before them.
04The response
2,222 reports of possible patients ("alerts") were received; 1,922 were checked and 417 retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Of 447 samples tested in the laboratory, 71 were positive, that is 15.9 %. 87.6 % of the people who had been close to a patient (the "contacts") were seen by follow-up teams, above the 85% threshold the INSP has set itself. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in the following provinces: Haut-Uélé and Sud-Ubangi. Ebola treatment centres are 62.7 % full: 900 patients for 1,435 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 376 patients for 228 beds. Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 57 burials carried out and 63 bodies tested. The 64 deaths reported do not come from the same provinces: not all of them publish these figures, and the three numbers are not comparable. Around new cases, 41 prevention rings were set up out of 47 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives. Vaccination: 3,410 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 Aug 2026: 2,810 in Tshopo and 600 in Bas-Uélé. Since the previous bulletin, 266 more in Tshopo and 100 more in Bas-Uélé, over 11 days. At control points on roads and at borders, 262,535 travellers passed through and 97.8 % had a temperature check.
05The difficulties encountered
In Ituri, six treatment centres remain full on the suspected-case side, data reporting is weak in several zones and responders are demoralised by unpaid wages. In Nord-Kivu, 42% of patients are treated outside the planned facilities, no bed is left in Butembo or Katwa, 11 homes out of 36 have been disinfected, and community relays in Vunyakondomi are being threatened. In Tshopo, a patient who fled the centre is still at home, two cases refuse any public-health measure, and the vaccination sessions of 16 September did not take place for lack of transport. In Haut-Uélé, no communication material is left. In Bas-Uélé, still no treatment centre and no ambulance, and 16 control points active out of 41.
