Today's figures

62 new cases, 37 deaths

The bulletin of 5 November, published the next day, reports 62 new confirmed cases and 37 deaths. That is slightly less than the week's average of 65 cases a day. The outbreak is not spreading: no new health zone since 28 October; it still affects 67, in 8 provinces.

In all, the outbreak counts 10,803 confirmed cases and 5,267 deaths: nearly one patient in two has died (48.8%). 2,912 people have recovered, 24 of them since the day before, and 1,020 patients are being treated in Ebola treatment centres. Over the week, the figures are falling: an average of 65 cases and 34 deaths a day, against 76 cases and 38 deaths the week before.

02 Where

Nord-Kivu accounts for more than half of the new cases: 32 of 62. Next come Ituri (28), Haut-Uélé (1) and Tshopo (1). The other four provinces report none.

Five health zones account for 47 of these cases: Beni leads with 22, then Mandima (11), Bunia (6), Kalunguta (5) and Nizi (3). Over the past three weeks, 45 of the 67 affected zones had at least one new case; the other 22, none.

03 Deaths

Of the 37 deaths of the day, 22 occurred in the community, outside a treatment centre: 13 in Ituri and 9 in Nord-Kivu. The other 15 occurred in a treatment centre: 11 in Ituri and 4 in Nord-Kivu.

04 The response

Teams received 3,885 reports of possible patients ("alerts") and checked 3,883: 559 were retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Sud-Ubangi did not send its figures.

In the laboratory, 62 of the 454 samples tested were positive, that is 13.7 %.

82.6 % of contacts, the people who had been close to a patient, were seen by follow-up teams. In Tshopo, only 46.1 % of contacts were seen, fewer than one in two.

Ebola treatment centres hold 972 patients for 1,652 beds, that is 59 per 100 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 578 patients for 434 beds.

Safe burials, carried out by protected teams to avoid contagion: 106 deaths reported, 137 burials carried out, 141 bodies tested.

Around new cases, 24 prevention rings were set up out of 45 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives.

Vaccination: 12,831 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 August, 493 more of them since the day before (299 in Nord-Kivu and 194 in Ituri).

At control points, on roads and at borders, 276,403 travellers passed through; 98 % had their temperature checked. The posts reported 4 alerts, 2 of them in Ituri, and intercepted 1 corpse.

05 The difficulties encountered

In Ituri, 4,906 travellers refused health screening. Three Nia-Nia checkpoints have stopped working, their staff demanding two months of unpaid wages, and the Avakubi checkpoint remains closed because of insecurity. Blood is still lacking and 37 patients are in critical condition.

In Nord-Kivu, a grenade was found outside the office of the Beni health zone. Outside the treatment centres, 184 patients are being cared for, and only 334 vaccine doses remain, 12.8% of the stock received.

In Tshopo, the house of a community health volunteer was set on fire in Bafwasende, where the response is suspended, and young people tried to take away a body.

In Haut-Uélé, only 2 of 8 treatment centres meet the standards, and health workers are threatening to strike because they have not been paid.

In Bas-Uélé, a nurses' strike is paralysing care across the whole province, and none of the 36 isolated suspected patients receives food support.

In Nord-Ubangi, there is still no treatment centre in Wapinda.
