Today's figures

76 new cases, 35 deaths

The bulletin of 6 November, published the next day, reports 76 new confirmed cases and 35 deaths. That is more than the week's average of 66 cases a day. The outbreak is not spreading: no new health zone since 28 October; it still affects 67, in 8 provinces.

In all, the outbreak counts 10,879 confirmed cases and 5,302 deaths: nearly one patient in two has died (48.7%). 2,935 people have recovered, 23 of them since the day before, and 1,016 patients are being treated in Ebola treatment centres. Over the week, the figures are falling: an average of 66 cases and 35 deaths a day, against 77 cases and 36 deaths the week before.

02 Where

Ituri accounts for more than half of the new cases: 47 of 76. Next come Nord-Kivu (24), Haut-Uélé (4) and Nord-Ubangi (1). The other four provinces report none.

Five health zones account for 47 of these cases: Mandima leads with 16, then Beni (12), Bunia (7), Mutwanga (7) and Mambasa (5). Over the past three weeks, 45 of the 67 affected zones had at least one new case; the other 22, none.

03 Deaths

Of the 35 deaths of the day, 22 occurred in the community, outside a treatment centre: 12 in Ituri and 10 in Nord-Kivu. The other 13 occurred in a treatment centre: 7 in Ituri, 5 in Nord-Kivu and 1 in Tshopo.

04 The response

Teams received 4,176 reports of possible patients ("alerts") and checked 3,855: 506 were retained as suspected cases, to be tested. Nord-Ubangi did not send its figures.

In the laboratory, 76 of the 456 samples tested were positive, that is 16.7 %.

75.4 % of contacts, the people who had been close to a patient, were seen by follow-up teams. Fewer than three contacts in four were seen in Nord-Kivu (73.4 %) and in Tshopo (52 %).

Ebola treatment centres hold 922 patients for 1,449 beds, that is 64 per 100 beds. Beyond capacity: Nord-Kivu, 578 patients for 434 beds.

Around new cases, 17 prevention rings were set up out of 20 expected, that is the disinfection of the home and the follow-up of relatives.

Vaccination: 12,831 people have received the Ervebo vaccine since the campaign began on 26 August.

At control points, on roads and at borders, 276,403 travellers passed through; 98 % had their temperature checked. The posts reported 4 alerts, 2 of them in Ituri, and intercepted 1 corpse.

05 The difficulties encountered

In Nord-Kivu, on the night of 5 to 6 November, an ADF attack in Beni territory caused several patients, including high-risk contacts, to flee the centre where they were under observation.

In Ituri, only 15 of 29 prevention rings could be opened, and 16 attempts to take samples from bodies failed.

In Tshopo, a confirmed patient in Kabondo has refused admission to the treatment centre for 12 days.

In Haut-Uélé, resistance from residents is preventing prevention rings from being opened in Isiro.

In Bas-Uélé, the nurses' strike is still paralysing care across the whole province, and the Bili health zone has not yet vaccinated anyone.
